DAVID
ALEXANDER, BRENT BOECHLER, VAL NELSON: ARTIST TALK
Saturday, July 18, 3 p.m.
Free
Three artists with widely differing approaches discuss their
relationship with drawing and the role that it plays in their
respective practices.
David Alexander studied
art at the Vancouver School of Art, Langara College and the
University of Saskatchewan, obtaining a masters degree from
the latter in the early 1980s. One of Canada's most recognized
painters, Alexander is known for his colourful elongated landscapes
and abstracted depictions of watery surfaces. His
works are in many public and private collections.
Brent
Boechler was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
A largely self-taught artist, Boechler's works explore the
delicate and sometimes unstable balance that exists between
the constructed systems of man and the natural world. Comprising
both representational and abstract elements, many of Boechler’s
images feature an idiosyncratic combination of drawing, mark
making and layered painting.
A
graduate of the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, Vancouver
painter and drawer Val Nelson has been praised
for her “loose, intelligent brushwork” (Vancouver
Sun). Whether she is painting contemporary street scenes or
making drawings of old world interiors, Nelson’s
images reflect her interest in the elements of optical experience.
Her work addresses themes of loss, memory and the search for
happiness.
